The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, making good on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by the public and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to communities nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended before then.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker said. “Starting next week, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to block the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official directed the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been recalled to execute staff reductions.

A report argued that a funding lapse limits the authority of the administration to carry out firings, referencing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck for the final days of the previous month but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations expired at the start of the month.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier stated. “Our air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
