California's Governor States He Is Weighing a White House Bid in 2028

Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections conclude.

"Yeah, I would be lying if I denied it," Newsom remarked when pressed about giving serious thought to a presidential run post the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."

Newsom's tenure as California's leader concludes in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he emphasized that any decision is still years away.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

He has emerged as a notable adversary of the Trump administration, employing his digital presence and pushing a ballot measure that would boost the party's representation in Congress in response to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has made him a target from political opponents.

Federal Funding Dispute

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a Sunday interview on a major news network. Duffy disclosed a strategy to cut federal funds from the state and suggested suspending the state's ability to issue commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from California," he stated, following a recently reported fatal crash in the state involving an non-citizen trucker that resulted in fatalities and casualties.

His administration highlighted that the federal government had renewed the driver's employment multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a CDL under U.S. law.

Duffy had earlier stated he was withholding $40m from the state for failing to implement English language requirements for truck drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," his administration retorted in a recent release addressing Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: The state's truck drivers had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."

Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations

A recently conducted poll found that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has grown to an typical level of 33.5% from around 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an mean of more than 40% to 38.4%.

Some time ago, Newsom stated while traveling several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.

"The thought that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, amazing," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the voters."
