Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional business:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
