New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD shared video stills Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries were reported.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
