No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
