Taliban Utilized Abandoned UK Gear to Find Local Nationals Who Worked Alongside Western Troops, Inquiry Learns

A whistleblower has told an official investigation that the UK left behind confidential technology enabling the militant group to track down Afghans who worked with western forces.

Data Breach Endangers Thousands at Risk

The source, identified as Person A, testified that individuals impacted by the security lapse were advised to change residences and alter their contact details to ensure their safety from the Taliban.

Lawmakers are looking into the UK government's management of a catastrophic disclosure of personal details affecting almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had asked to relocate to the UK to escape the Taliban.

The Information Breach Occurred

A spreadsheet including confidential details, such as names, contact details and sometimes household data, was mistakenly released by a worker employed at UK special forces headquarters in last year.

The breach was discovered only in August 2023, when details of nine people who had requested to relocate to the UK appeared on Facebook.

Taliban Capabilities

“There seems to be this misconception that militant forces do not have similar capabilities that western nations possess,” Person A informed MPs.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Should they obtain mobile details, they can locate your exact position. This is exactly how intelligence groups accomplished.”

During testimony about regarding if authorities owned necessary encryption, Person A declared: “They have complete capability.”

Impact of the Security Lapse

Preliminary research presented to the inquiry indicated that at least 49 relatives and associates of people concerned by the incident had been murdered.

A gag order about the breach was put in force in August 2023 and blocked any information about it from public disclosure until recently.

Safety Measures

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she was working with advised Afghan families they were working with that they had “concerns that certain devices had been intercepted”.

“We recommended that they relocate if they could and switched their contact details. That constituted the crucial data that, if the Taliban obtained this information, would lead to them being traced,” she said.

Disputed Conclusions

The source contested that internal investigation conducted by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to determine that the obtaining of the records by the regime was “not significantly alter an individual's existing exposure”.

“The crucial point is that these individuals are not standing up to the authorities; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

Person A described terrible treatment endured by affected individuals, involving electric shock torture, waterboarding, and physical abuse.

“We have had young kids who have had limbs fractured to force relatives to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
