The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
