It has been 30 anniversary since the original Toy Story movie debuted, establishing the animation giant as a leading animation studio and bringing viewers to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.

In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed recently, offering a glimpse into the plot but keeping viewers wondering how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Spooks the Gang

The preview reveals Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — getting a brand new plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters seem to view it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the teaser avoids is why Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (the actress), journeying with a carnival and assisting giveaway items locate loving owners.

Surely, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him appear in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is a little strange, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have come back with him. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some aspects are continuing from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), entrusting her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser displays the insignia attached to her outfit.

Hopefully she is still the driving force among the group.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
