Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
